Not so much as a rat trap as a poverty trap!

Sorry I've not posted for awhile but half term reared its ugly head and little people required attention. I was considering the issue that LA's actually cause people to become benefit reliant when they place people into B&B or into temporary accommodation. Where I work the cost of the temporary accommodation is over £350 per week so therefore those people who are working and find themselves homeless are actually discriminated against and there is no incentive for those on benefits to seek work. I know that housing benefit can be claimed but in my view too little is done to ensure that people are given accommodation that is truely affordable. I wonder what other peoples views are?

Hrm if the accommodation is that expensive I think it wouldn't be suitable accommdotion.

As a CAB adviser I see many single parents who are never really going to be better off working than on benefits.

HB disregards need to be greater or maybe they should change it so that only 25 pct of excess income is used in HB calcualations rather than the 65 pct at the moment.

You can hardly blame people for wanting social housing where rents for a 3 bed might be 100 a week compared to 200 plus in the private market.

Getting your benefits sorted out when you stop work or start work needs to be made easier to.

Having the HRMC (tax credits) DWP (IS, IB, JSA) and the Local Authority (HB) involved means that something is bound to go wrong!

erk horrible spelling of accommodation there!

Temporary accommodation is impossible for anyone working whose earnings put them over full HB - in London Boroughs anyway. I often see duty discharged and rent arrears possessisons for exactly this reason. Suitability is only challengeable by s.202/s.204, or judicial revie at a long shot and the time limits are usually well passed by the point the reality sinks in, or HB decision is received. Bloody awful situation.

I am EXACTLY in this situation ! adding on top that our Nursery fee's, food and travel expenses are not taken into account by our case worker ! Our monthly expenditure is -100 !!
I have had to take out payday loans just to afford it !!
And will our case worker return any calls, faxes or e-mail !! Will they heck !
